Mother accused of breaking baby's arm

A Round Lake Beach woman is charged with breaking her infant's arm during a bout of frustration, police say.

Ofelia Sanchez, 32, of 1329 Melrose Ave., is charged with felony aggravated battery of a child following the Oct. 4 incident. The charge carries a prison sentence of up to 30 years, Round Lake Beach Police Sgt. Gil Rivera said.

Rivera said Sanchez is out on bond, and no court date has been set. Police are waiting to hear if other indictments are coming from a Lake County grand jury.

The infant has been removed from the home by the Department of Children and Family Services and given to the child's biological father, who lives in Round Lake Beach, Rivera said.

Rivera said police responded to a rescue call at Sanchez's home last week where the child was in pain. The infant was rushed by ambulance to Condell Medical Center. Sanchez was with the child on the ride to the medical center.

When X-rays showed the broken arm, Sanchez admitted inflicting the injuries when she became frustrated with the infant, authorities said.

Condell officials contacted police, and Sanchez was arrested at the medical center.
