Car plows into Des Plaines gym's window
A car smashed into a gymnasium window in downtown Des Plaines during rush hour traffic Thursday.
The vehicle, coming off Lee Street, cut across a median, hit a small tree, ran into a parked car and then went through the window of the Flex gym at 1453 Market Street, according to Battalion Chief Scott Small of the Des Plaines fire department.
He said the driver of the car and a woman in the parked car were both transported to the hospital, although their injuries looked minor.
"It was very lucky (that nobody else was injured) because the place was very crowded," Small said.
He said patrons at Cheeseburger in Paradise across the street were eating outdoors at the time of the accident, around 5:50 p.m., and lucked out that the car didn't veer across in that direction.
Small said the car was about three-quarters of the way into the gym and knocked up against the welcome desk.
The gym was closed down until it could be inspected.
Police on Thursday night said they had no additional information on the crash.
