Briefs: Woman saved in fire

A 46-year-old Chicago man rescued an 82-year-old Prospect Heights woman from her apartment after a burning candle set a kitchen cabinet on fire at Lake Run Apartments, 16 E. Old Willow Road, police said. According to reports, the man saw the woman standing on her balcony screaming for help around 1 p.m. Tuesday. He ran into the building, through her apartment and led her from the balcony out the front apartment door. She was taken to Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview for observation, reports said. The fire was confined to the cabinet; a damage estimate was not available. Names of the two people were not released.

Santo walk gets results

More than 35,000 walkers filled five Chicago-area walk sites Sunday to participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Illinois' 29th Annual Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes. This year's event has raised more than $5.8 million for diabetes research. The Illinois chapter is the largest fundraising chapter in the country, donating more than $15 million annually to diabetes research. Information on the 2008 walk will be available on the Web site www.jdrfillinois.org.

Get tickets while they last

The U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers' Chorus will present a free concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights. Tickets are available by mail only through a form published several times a week in the Daily Herald. Ticket orders must be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. For details, call (847) 427-4381. The U.S. Army Field Band, an elite 65-member instrumental ensemble, performs marches, overtures, popular music and patriotic selections. The Soldiers' Chorus has earned an international reputation for presenting musical excellence and inspiring patriotism. The Daily Herald and District 214 Community Education are co-sponsoring the concert.

Dog yoga class Saturday

What's touted as the area's first-ever dog yoga class is coming to Barrington Saturday. The "doga" class will feature dog massages, agility training, concentration exercises, physical therapy and "vibrational healing." The class is scheduled for 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday at Citizens Park in Barrington, 511 Lake Zurich Road. There is a suggested donation of $10. The money raised will be used to benefit Fur Keeps Animal Rescue in Barrington Hills. For details or to RSVP, call Yogawerks at (847) 713-2423.
