Women will join walk through Aurora outlet mall to fight breast cancer

For Magaly Foster, the cause hits close to home.

In 2005, her mother-in-law, who couldn't afford insurance, died from breast cancer.

"You'll always hear stories of survivors, but never about the non-survivors," the Aurora woman said. "I'm here today to speak for her."

To that end, Foster will lead a team of more than 100 participants in a 5K walk on Sunday to fight breast cancer.

The second annual Fox Valley "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, will begin at 8 a.m. at Aurora's Chicago Premium Outlets on Farnsworth Avenue off the Reagan Memorial Tollway.

Registration starts at 8 a.m.; the walk at 9 a.m.

More than 1,000 breast cancer survivors and supporters are expected to participate to raise awareness and funds for the disease.

Last year's event raised more than $100,000 for the Illinois Division of the American Cancer Society. Money will be used for research, education, advocacy and patient services.

Unlike last year, participants on Sunday will walk directly through the outdoor mall - no doubt motivating some to stick around and shop afterward.

The event is free but walkers are encouraged to collect donations and pledges. For more information, call (630) 879-9009 or visit www.cancer.org/stridesonline.

Foster also walked last year in honor of her mother-in-law, who worked part-time and cared for her mentally disabled adult son.

Her mother was unable to get the services and care she needed. "She did not have that opportunity," she said.

That's why it's even more important to her to get the word out about mammograms and early detection.

The atmosphere at last year's race was "just unbelievable," she said. "It was exciting and emotional," she said. "The survivor stories are amazing."
