Governor's income drops
SPRINGFIELD -- Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his wife's combined income dropped last year, although they made money off a major campaign contributor.
After getting a six-month extension, Blagojevich has filed his tax return for 2006. It shows he and Patti Blagojevich made $267,490, or $19,000 less than the year before.
Most of their income came from the governor's salary of about $150,000 and his wife's real estate business. She received $60,000 in salary and $46,170 in profits from River Realty Inc.
A major client for Patti Blagojevich was Amrish Mahajan, the president of Harvey-based Mutual Bank. He has helped raise more than $500,000 in political contributions for Blagojevich.
His wife, Anita Mahajan, faces criminal charges of charging the state more than $2 million for services her now-defunct drug-testing firm, K.K. Bio-Science Inc., never performed. She has pleaded innocent, and she had state contracts long before Blagojevich took office.
The Blagojeviches also donated $3,895 to charity, about 1.4 percent of their income.
The couple owed $47,363 in federal taxes. They overpaid $15,680 and are applying that to next year's taxes instead of taking a refund, Blagojevich spokeswoman Abby Ottenhoff said. They owed the state $8,273 and overpaid by $519, which they will apply to their 2007 taxes.
