Course to teach how to leave good impression

Whether you're ready or not, holiday festivities and parties are right around the corner.

If you need to network at your office party or find a date at a Christmas gathering, a new class at Harper College could help.

Communication Specialist Marianne Rowe-Dimas will teach Great First and Lasting Impressions on Nov. 5.

The course helps students master communication to make sure their first impact on strangers is a positive one.

What are Dimas' top three tips?

• Dress appropriately. Make sure your clothing fits your body and the occasion.

• Pay attention to your grooming. People notice good hygiene -- especially your nails.

• Manage your body language. Make sure your posture and movements are appropriate for the situation.

The class will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 5. Tuition is $35. Call (847) 925-6300 or go to www.harpercollege.edu to register.

Final touch to memorial: The Palatine Fire Department and Rotary Club will install a Rotary plaque at the Fireman's Memorial at 5:45 p.m. Friday. Fire Chief and Rotarian Norm Malcolm will lead the dedication ceremony.

The Rotary club spent three years raising money for the memorial and the plaque will complete the site. The memorial commemorates the lives of five Palatine firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The Fireman's Memorial is at Slade and Brockway streets in downtown Palatine.

Deadline for calendar: Friday is the deadline for all submissions to the Palatine/Inverness Arts Council's annual calendar. Students from the area are invited to submit artwork for this popular calendar that goes out for free to local residents. Applications can be dropped off at the Palatine Village Hall before 5 p.m. Friday. Go to www.palatineinvernessarts.org for information.

Got food? Palatine dentist Nancy Bagel will hold an annual food drive at the office, 177 W. Northwest Hwy. For the third year in a row, the office will be a drop-off center for non-perishable items for the Palatine Food Pantry. People can drop off food between Oct. 22 and Dec. 14. Call (847) 934-1177.

Golf team to be honored: St. Viator High School will hold a rally to celebrate the boys' golf team's first state title in school history on Monday. The rally will follow the annual St. Viator Day Mass and is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. On Oct. 13, the golf team took home the inaugural IHSA Class 3A state tournament trophy. They finished with a five-stroke victory over second-place Quincy High School.
