• What is your favorite memory from Butterfield School?: "My favorite school memory was the first day of school of my first year at Butterfield School. Butterfield had not, in many, many years, held an opening day flag-raising ceremony. Based on the size of the school and structure of the very first day, it seemed challenging at best. Nonetheless, with good planning, strong guidance and a commitment toward bringing the entire school population together on the front lawn, all students, staff and many parents gathered around the Butterfield School flagpole as the custodian, Ruben Carlin, raised the flag. Watching the red, white and blue wave in the August breeze, I initiated the Pledge of Allegiance and the music teacher, Robin Hoffmann, subsequently rallied all in joining her as she sang the "Star-Spangled Banner." It was beautiful, a truly moving experience. There were tears in the eyes of parents. I knew, at that moment, that Butterfield School was a very special place. Staff was willing to try something new, to risk standard procedures and, in the end, the efforts were appreciated. Bringing our school together on that exciting and inspiring morning made a profound impact. To date, the tradition continues.

• What do you think is an unique aspect of your school? "Butterfield School is incredible both inside and out. The land the school sits upon is beautiful. The green space, trees and play fields are rare for schools these days. Inside of the school, classrooms are filled with up-to-date materials and supplies, while our recent Learning Resource Center renovation has brought an impressive spirit to the heart of our school."

• What are you most proud of? "There is a wonderful sense of positive energy expressed on behalf of the children, parents and staff."

• If all school enrollments were determined by choice, what would you say to potential parents to convince them to choose Butterfield School for their children? "I would encourage parents to visit Butterfield School. Walk with me. One walk throughout the school and you can feel the positive energy. You immediately know that good things are happening here."

• How has technology changed the way students learn over the past five years? Has that been a good change? "The advancements in technology have been extremely positive for schools. Technology has broadened the scope of learning and communication for both children and adults. The immediacy of building upon our knowledge base is astounding. We are truly creating 21st-century learners."
