Abbott Middle School marks 75th anniversary with open house

Abbott Middle School, 949 Van St. in Elgin, is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a community open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The school's band, orchestra, chorus and drama ensemble will perform; a special historical exhibit will be on display in the cafeteria; and refreshments will be served.

A new mural to commemorate the anniversary was designed by teacher Mariano Mercado and painted by the students.

The school building was a product of the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression.

There are still terra cotta tiles depicting nursery rhymes at the drinking fountains in the original sections of the building. The school was named after Dr. Edward H. Abbott, who served in the Spanish-American War.

The public is invited to attend. Many teachers past and present will also be on hand. For information, call the school, (847) 888-5160.
