Briefs: Cosi sales rise 1.6% in third quarter

DEERFIELD -- Quick-casual sandwich and salad chain Cosi Inc. said Tuesday third-quarter same-store sales grew 1.6 percent. Total sales rose 8.1 percent to $35.6 million, from $33 million last year. Cosi also lowered its franchise restaurant opening expectations. It now expects franchisees to open 14 restaurants during the rest of the year, for a total of 30 new franchise restaurants open in 2007. Previously, the company said it expected to open 40 to 45 new franchise restaurants.

Baxter gains rights to blood enzyme

DEERFIELD -- Baxter International Inc. said Tuesday it acquired worldwide rights to a genetically engineered protein that plays a role in a rare blood disorder. Baxter will make an upfront payment and subsequent royalty and milestone payments to Kaketsuken, a research foundation in Kumamoto, Japan, for the recombinant version of the enzyme ADAMTS13, Baxter said, without specifying how much it would pay.
