Central Illinois man dies after his SUV is hit by Amtrak train

GIRARD -- Illinois State Police say a 19-year-old central Illinois man has died after his sport utility vehicle was struck by an Amtrak passenger train.

Matthew Munchalfen of Girard died from his injuries at Carlinville Area Hospital. He didn't have any passengers.

State police say Munchalfen failed to yield to the oncoming train before he was hit at a Macoupin County railroad crossing.

Police say the train pushed his Ford Explorer more than 2,100 feet on the tracks before stopping
