The real issue is freedom of religion
In regard to the "God Bless America" ban at Buffalo Grove High School, the issue seems to be about freedom of religion and how religion may be expressed as part of our culture.
My dictionary has four definitions of religion. Briefly they are 1. service or worship of God or the supernatural, 2. devotion to religious faith, 3. a personal or institutional set of religious beliefs, attitudes, practices, 4. a cause, principal or belief held to with faith and ardor.
Simply, religion is the human response to God or the supernatural as you will. It explains why many different people and cultures have many different practices. It also applies fully to atheism, the religion that denies God.
Our Constitution guarantees the right for all (believers in God or not) to practice their religion without being coerced by government.
Blaise Pascal recognized two types of tyranny: the tyranny of the majority and the tyranny of the minority. He also recognized that tyranny is wrong no matter where it comes from.
A belief in God (or the creator as found in the Declaration of Independence) is the foundation of all human rights. Rights do not come from the government. This belief is also deeply imbedded in the culture of the United States, despite the efforts of many to rewrite history or to marginalize faith in God. Under communism for example, religion, in the most common definition, was outlawed, thereby making non-belief in God the official religion held to by government.
Tyranny is tyranny.
