Religion is about fantasy, not morality
D.O. Goodman's OC.t 11 letter regarding the church/state split is a scary discourse if it represents the beliefs of "educated" people.
Goodman references the Bible as the basis for governing our nation and as the basis of all morality, and equates nonbelievers with communists and Satanists.
The only real atrocity here is the defamation of good people who refuse to subjugate themselves to the fantasy yolk of religion or the absurd logic of Goodman. Goodman would have us believe that atheists or agnostics are Satanists.
Common sense would tell any rational person that someone who doesn't believe in God wouldn't believe in Satan. Both are religions. If religion is the basis for morality, why have hundreds of thousands of murders been committed in the name of religion? More people have been tortured and killed in the name of religion than for any other purported purpose. This is still going on today.
One has to look no further than the modern church to see the evil that results from the funneling of money and power to those who uphold themselves as religious leaders. Is this the kind of moral leadership Goodman wants to run the government?
All the crimes of the world are not committed by atheists and agnostics. Morality does exist separate from religion, despite what Goodman believes. People develop a sense of right vs. wrong, fair vs. unfair, good vs. bad from an early age and it has been argued that we may be born this way.
No one has to join a religion to be a good or better person. Separation of church and state has zero to do with communism. In fact communism quite resembles religion in that individuals are expected to give up everything and subjugate themselves to the people in charge, supposedly for the common good of all.
Religion is simply an invention of man used to control power and resources. While some good things come from religion, it's hardly a firm foundation for any government.
