Molestation suspect unfit for trial

A Kildeer man accused of molesting four boys in 2005 was found psychologically unfit for trial Friday.

Paul Olsson, 20, was taken into custody to await transfer to a secure hospital of the state Department of Human Services immediately after Circuit Judge Fred Foreman's ruling.

Olsson, who had been free after posting $250,000 in cash for bail, will be held without bond for up to a year while he undergoes mental health treatment.

He faces numerous charges stemming from the molestation of four boys at the Lincolnshire Bath and Tennis Club, where he worked as a tennis coach.

Olsson has had a stormy relationship with the court system since he fired his original lawyer in January.

He has repeatedly told Foreman he wants to hire an attorney but is unable to find one to take his case. Olsson has also resisted all efforts to have a lawyer appointed to represent him.

The latest such appointee, Assistant Public Defender Keith Grant, said Olsson continues to refuse to meet to discuss the case.

At Grant's request, Foreman ordered a court psychologist examine Olsson, and that report was presented to the court Friday.

Both Grant and Assistant State's Attorney Veronica O'Malley agreed to accept the report's recommendations in court without discussion.

Citing the confidentiality of the report, they also declined to discuss specific findings after the hearing.

Olsson said he wanted to challenge the finding that he is unfit and should undergo treatment in a secure facility.

"I would like to have a doctor of my choosing review this report," he told Foreman. "I find the conclusion, for lack of a better word, ridiculous."

Foreman did not indicate the report was subject to debate beyond himself and the lawyers on the case, and had Olsson taken to the Lake County jail to await transfer.

A review of Olsson's treatment status is scheduled for Nov. 13.
