South Elgin Lions collecting used eyeglasses for people in need
For the past three years, three South Elgin elementary schools have collected eyeglasses during the month of October, in conjunction with Lions International's Sight Night campaign on Oct. 31.
This year, the two classes from each elementary school that collects the most eyeglasses will win a pizza party.
All eyeglasses collected will be sent to the Lions of Illinois Foundation in Sycamore to be recycled and given to people in need, with the help of medical missionaries in Central and South America.
This is yet another way the South Elgin Leos (Lions Club members) continually meet Helen Keller's challenge to become "knights of the blind."
The club is requesting the assistance of the community to make this the biggest year yet.
If you are unable to donate used sunglasses, telescopic, magnifying, or prescription eyeglasses to an elementary student, Shear Excellence, at 1275 W. Spring St. in South Elgin, is also collecting eyeglasses.
For each eyeglass turned into Shear Excellence, that individual will receive a $3 coupon for any service over $13.
The South Elgin Lions have yellow collection boxes at the village hall, 10 N. Water St., and the Lions hall, 500 Fulton St. in South Elgin. For details, call Leo advisers Allan Shelton at (847) 695-8174 or Debra Mainard at (847) 697-8611.
