Man accused of killing outside Lincoln Library fit for trial
SPRINGFIELD -- A man who allegedly beat to death a homeless man outside the Lincoln Library has been found fit to stand trial.
Robert B. Jones, 46, who is also homeless, underwent a fitness evaluation in September, and Sangamon County Circuit Judge Leslie Graves on Thursday ruled he is fit to stand trial.
Jones is charged with three counts of first-degree murder for allegedly killing Timothy Ryan, 45, on July 26 by stomping on his head.
During a preliminary hearing, Detective Brian Oakes said police have not determined a motive for the attack.
Oakes testified witnesses said they saw Jones approach Ryan from behind and punch him, causing him to fall down.
