New MGM set showcases top musicals
MGM Studios reigned supreme during Hollywood's golden era with its musicals. There are collections available that feature MGM musicals; the latest one focuses on six terrific films that have won Academy Awards and include great song and dance numbers.
"MGM Classic Musicals Collection" (MGM, six discs, $59.98)
The films are: "Guys and Dolls" with Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blaine; "West Side Story" with Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris; "Fiddler on the Roof" with Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey and Molly Picon; "A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum" with Zero Mostel, Buster Keaton, Phil Silvers and Jack Gilford; "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" with Robert Morse, Michele Lee and Rudy Vallee; and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" with Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes and Lionel Jeffries.
Collections
"American Movie Musicals Collection" (MGM, three discs, $29.98)
The three musicals in this collection have been digitally restored and remastered for the finest video and audio.
"A Chorus Line" tells the story of the competitive life of professional dancers and features the songs "What I Did for Love," "I Can Do That," "At the Ballet," "Surprise" and "One."
"De-Lovely" is an intensive musical portrait of American composer Cole Porter and features many of his songs.
"Hair" tells the story of a hippie community during the Vietnam War; songs include "Hair," "Aquarius" and "Let the Sunshine In."
"Fox Horror Classics" (Fox, three discs, $26.98)
John Brahm was a director whose film noir offerings were filled with suspense and intrigue. The three films in this set are "The Lodger," "Hangover Square" and "The Undying Monster." The bonus features include commentaries, featurettes, vintage radio show, restoration comparison, trailers, still gallery, advertising gallery and more.
