Local photographer celebrates 20 years behind the camera
Dale Horn started his photography business from the basement of his mother's Arlington Heights home on Vail Street 20 years ago.
Horn, 47, now operates his growing business, Dale Horn Photography, out of his own home in Hawthorn Woods, where he's built a professional studio and gallery.
"People are really surprised when they walk in," Horn said.
Most of his studio work is devoted to family portraits -- including senior and children's photographs -- as well as some glamour photography. About half of his work is wedding photography.
In running his own business, he takes pride in the personal service he is able to provide. The photographer is able to work with his clients, get to know them and figure out exactly what they're looking for.
"I believe in listening to the customer," he said.
One of his goals is to create a relaxed atmosphere, both in the studio and for weddings. "This is a big plus," he said. Mothers with young children really appreciate this aspect, he adds.
Horn also does a great deal of his work outdoors. He is now promoting his fall portraits sessions that are done at a forest preserve in Palatine. "This allows for a wide variety of looks," he said. He still has openings for the outdoor shots that are done every half hour Oct. 14 and 21.
His prices range from the medium to the higher end. For example, a children's portrait package runs $215 and includes an 11-by-14, 8-by-10, two 5-by-7s and eight wallet-sized photographs.
Photo sessions for holiday portraits and cards are also now under way, he added.
Horn has worked with many Chicago Bears players and their families. He also donates his time to local charities.
His interest in photography developed while he was at Arlington High School where he worked on the student newspaper. He recalls his first assignment was to shoot an orchestra and dance show. His shots developed into a two-page spread.
Horn and his wife, Gail, have two children: Kristin, 17, is a senior at Lake Zurich High School; and their son, Ryan, is 19. Dale is celebrating his 48th birthday and 22nd wedding anniversary Saturday.
"My wife has been so supportive. She has been from the beginning," he said.
He enjoys his career. Horn said he started photographing one little girl when she was 2, and he's still taking her family's pictures now that she's 22.
"I love what I do. I enjoy being creative and coming up with new ideas. It's so interesting to see families grow."
