Truck brings down power lines

An oversized truck carrying a tall load took down overhead power and cable lines in the area of Main (former Route 22) and Church streets in Lake Zurich today.

Lake Zurich Police closed the intersection about 2:50 p.m. It delayed area traffic, primarily from Lake Zurich High School, for more than an hour. Those roadways are now cleared and open.

Lake Zurich Unit District 95 parents were notified of the accident and possible delays to school buses arriving at homes through a new School Messenger rapid alert system.

"This is the first time it's been used," said Jim Jennings, District 95 spokesman. "We wanted to let them know that safety is our priority. We had roughly 6,700 students. The message would have gone to every home."

ComEd power service was interrupted, but restored relatively quickly. Comcast is still out repairing its service line, said Lake Zurich Police Cmdr. Kevin Finlon.

The oversized load was a tall piece of earth-moving equipment. The truck should not have been anywhere near those streets, Finlon said.

"They went off route and it appears that they may have been given poor directions," he said.

Police will issue citations to the truck driver after the accident is completely investigated, Finlon said.
