Baseball, softball

Heat tryouts: Heat Baseball, based in Hoffman Estates, has scheduled tryouts for 1 p.m. Sunday and Oct. 21 at High Point Park, 1730 Glenlake Road, Hoffman Estates. The team is seeking college-bound juniors and seniors from the Northwest and surrounding suburbs. Players should arrive 30 minutes early for sign-in. The 2008 team will compete in eight to 10 top showcase tournaments. The Heat has produced some of the area's most elite players, and provides players opportunities for maximum exposure to college recruiters and scouts.

Basketball

Wheeling Junior Lady Wildcats tryouts: The Wheeling Junior Lady Wildcats Feeder Basketball teams will hold tryouts for the upcoming season Oct. 21 at Wheeling High School, 900 S. Elmhurst Road, Wheeling, at the following times:

• Girls, fifth grade -- 4 to 5 p.m.

Girls, sixth grade -- 5 to 6 p.m.

• Girls, seventh grade -- 6 to 7:15 p.m.

• Girls, eighth grade -- 7:45 to 8:30 p.m.

To be eligible, girls must live in the Wheeling High School district Players should arrive 15 minutes early for registration, bring a basketball and enter the school from the rear parking lot. For information, call Bob or Teresa Kuzmanic at (847) 390-0812.

Corsairs tryouts:ŒThe Junior Corsairs Basketball Program offers an opportunity for sixth- to eighth-grade boys to compete against various teams from Lake and Cook counties. Tryout dates and times for all levels are 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. Nov. 8, noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 11 and 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. Nov. 15. Practices and home games will be held at Carmel High School.

The teams will be highly competitive and play about 40 games between November and March. Anyone interested can call Jon Baffico at (847) 388-3402 or e-mail jbaffico@carmelhs.org.

Volleyball

F.O.C.U.S. tryouts:ŒF.O.C.U.S. Sports, Inc. will hold volleyball club tryouts for boys and girls levels at the Elk Grove Park District, 1000 Wellington Ave., Elk Grove (in the Main Gym, courts 1-3) at the following times:

• 12U, 13U, 14U teams -- Sunday, 1 to 1:30 p.m., registration; 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., tryouts; 5:30 to 6 p.m., qualifying players meeting.

Makeup dates are:

• 12U-14U (Boys and Girls) and 15U-17U/18U (Girls only) -- Nov. 4, 1 to 1:30 p.m., registration; 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., tryouts; 5:30 to 6 p.m.; qualifying players meeting.

For players who qualify for a team, there will be a parent, players and coaches meeting. Also, an initial down payment of $125 will be required.

Wrestling

Registration:ŒThe Sharks Wrestling Club, an affiliate of Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation, will hold registration for the fall season from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Oct. 18 at Maine Township East High School, 2601 Dempster St., Park Ridge. These are regular practice nights for the club.

Chad Conley and Mike Conrad, co-founders of the club, will welcome back existing members and get acquainted with newcomers and their parents at a clinic prior to registration. Details of this event will be forthcoming. If you have a son or daughter between 5 and 14 who is interested in the sport and would like to be part of the organization, call Mike Conrad at (847) 299-7531.

The club has a contingent of seven volunteers who have coached young athletes for participation in numerous meets that lead up to the regionals, sectionals and state finals. The Sharks host their meet at Maine East in December, The proceeds help the club and the school obtain equipment.
