Illinois Chrysler workers on furlough during walkout
BELVIDERE -- Workers at a Chrysler assembly plant in northern Illinois were on furlough when a walkout against the auto maker began. They were on furlough when it ended, too.
The walkout lasted about six hours before the United Auto Workers union reached a tentative four-year contract with Chrysler.
Chrysler says the Belvidere factory employs about 3,800 workers making vehicles such as the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot. Workers at Belvidere are on a two-week furlough.
Among the major issues being hashed out were funding for a union-run trust that would handle future retiree health care bills and promises that future products will be built at U.S. factories.
