Help me get to know Wheeling

From now on, I'll be adding tidbits about Wheeling into this weekly column. I've taken on the coverage of Wheeling along with that of Buffalo Grove and Long Grove.

I look forward to meeting the residents of Wheeling and hope to keep you all updated on what's going on in town.

Feel free to contact me if you hear of something going on or if you just want to chat.

And, of course, the same goes for Buffalo Grove and Long Grove residents.

Letter of thanks: The Hernandez Ibarra family, who recently lost their 5-year-old son when he was burned by a turkey fryer, wrote a letter to the community.

Israel died Aug. 29, and the family just recently returned from Mexico, where they buried him in the town of Zacatecas.

Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 passed the letter along with thanks for the community:

"Dear parents, community members and organizations: We would like to thank you all for the moral and financial support that you have given our family during the passing of our little son Israel. There are no words that could truly express how thankful we are for the help you have given us.

Thank you for keeping us in your prayers.

Sincerely,

The Hernandez Ibarra family"

Israel had just started kindergarten at Twain Elementary, and the district has helped raise funds for medical and funeral expenses.

All Hallow's eve: The official trick or treat hours in Buffalo Grove are from 2 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.

Feel free to fill up on candy and treats from your neighbors within that time span.

Halloween to Christmas: The Buffalo Grove police department is collecting toys for their Toys for Tots drive.

The donations can be dropped off in the lobby of the department at 46 Raupp Blvd.

Donations will be accepted between Nov. 12 to Dec. 14.

Celebrate the fall: The Wheeling park district will be having its annual Fall Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. this Sunday at Heritage Park, 333 W. Dundee Road.

The event is free, although there are some charges for some food and activities.

The festival includes pony and hay rides, petting zoo, crafts and games. Children can also bring a kite to fly or make one for the Kite Fly.

A Baggo tournament will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. for adults. Registration is free, but adults must sign up in advance.

To sign up, or for more information, call (847) 465-3333.
