Fakir Muhammad Jaffrie surrendered to Kane County authorities Wednesday after being charged in the September crash.
He was originally charged with driving too fast for conditions and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. But authorities sent blood samples for tests to determine if Jaffrie was drunk or had other drugs in his system.
Jaffrie is now charged with four counts of aggravated DUI, eight counts of reckless homicide and two misdemeanor counts of DUI with marijuana in his system.
If convicted, he faces up to 28 years in prison.
His next court date is 9 a.m. Friday, when Jaffrie's attorney will argue before Judge Allen Anderson to have Jaffrie's bond reduced. In order for him to be released pending trial, he must post $250,000, or 10 percent of bail.
