Jacobs' turn this time
Jacobs was a little late arriving at Dundee-Crown, but the Golden Eagles didn't waste any time once they got there Tuesday.
Brian Obmalay scored in the first minute of the game and Jacobs went on to beat the Chargers, 2-1, in a boys soccer game at the Dundee-Crown Bowl.
Mark Kyszka's goal with 13:44 to play was the game-winner as the Eagles (7-14, 1-9) picked up their first victory in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division and avenged a 3-1 loss to the Chargers earlier in the season.
Jacobs arrived about a half-hour late due to a miscommunication on the starting time. Once the game did start, the Eagles immediately took the ball downfield.
"I figured we'd still be on the bus, but it looked like they were still on the bus," said Jacobs coach Jim Dzialo. "Maybe the lull hurt them because they waited for us to get ready."
The Chargers bounced back.
"I wasn't too worried at that point, plenty of game to be played," said Charger coach Rey Vargas. "But stupid things happen in a game and it brings us down."
The Chargers (9-8, 4-5), tied the game late in the first half on a goal by Christian Meza. Meza found himself alone in front of the net and his low shot on the ground from about 10 yards out found the net.
The Chargers lost Meza early in the second half when he picked up a red card.
The teams played evenly for most of the second half. Kyszka had a breakaway chance midway through, but his cross sailed harmlessly through the crease. Later, Bogdan Buzdugan's breakaway was broken up by Eddie Bernal, who flew across the field to intercept Buzdugan.
Then Kyszka regained the lead for Jacobs. Jonathon Ward intercepted a clearing pass and sent a feed to Kyszka, who was all alone about 15 yards from the net.
Danny Trevor had 3 saves in the net for Jacobs.
The victory was a bright spot in a frustrating season for the Golden Eagles.
"We know we're a good side," said Dzialo. "Usually we're one goal short every game, so we're competing with all the teams."
