Teen dies in Sunday crash

A 16-year-old Carpentersville boy died of head injuries early Sunday morning in Elgin after a woman sideswiped the vehicle he was riding in, Kane County Coroner Chuck West said.

The accident occurred at 12:18 a.m. at Randall Road and Route 72, which has been named the most dangerous intersection in the county.

According to West, the woman was driving a van north on Randall Road when she sideswiped the vehicle that four people, including the teenager, were in.

Officials did not have information on whether the woman will be charged with a crime.

West says she hit the vehicle from the right side, and the 16-year-old-boy was riding in the middle of the rear seats.

Reached on his cell phone Sunday, West did not have the boy's name on hand. He also doesn't know if the boy was wearing a seat belt.

The teen was pronounced dead at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, West said, the same hospital where the female driver was being treated.

The three passengers with the teenager were being treated at Sherman Hospital, West said.

The teenager's autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

While Elgin rescue workers handled the accident, fire personnel from Carpentersville and Rutland Dundee assisted, Elgin Captain Dick Cummings said.

Randall Road and Route 72 consistently has had one of the highest accident rates of all Kane County intersections, leading county transportation officials to name it the most dangerous crossroads in the county last year.

In June, a four-vehicle accident there sent two people to the hospital.

Just more than a year ago, a semitrailer hit a van at the intersection, killing a 35-year-old van passenger.

And in 2005, a crash there killed a South Elgin man.
