Register for programs at the adult reference desk or call the library. Patrons must register in person for programs requiring a fee. Programs may be canceled due to lack of registration.
Those requiring special accommodations to attend any library programs should contact community services two weeks in advance.
Fall Storytimes: Registration for fall storytimes in under way. Children must meet the age requirement by the start of the program. All programs except the Wednesday night Family Drop-In require registration, which can be done in person or over the phone. Register only your family.
• Storytime for 3-year-olds and a caregiver: 7 p.m. Mondays today through Nov. 12; 1 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 9 through Nov. 13; 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays Oct. 10 through Nov. 14; and 9:30 a.m. Thursday Oct. 11 through Nov. 15.
• Storytime for 4- and 5-year olds: 1 p.m. Mondays, today through Nov. 12; 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 9 through Nov. 13; 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 10 through Nov. 14; and 7 p.m. Thursdays Oct. 11 through Nov. 15.
• Family Storytime, Register up to three children from your family from age 2 through kindergarten: 10:30 a.m. Mondays, today through Nov. 12; 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 9 through Nov. 13; and 1 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 11 through Nov. 15.
• Family Drop-In Storytime: 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 10 through Nov. 14.
Lunchtime @ the Library: Bring a lunch and the library will provide a guest speaker, beverage and dessert. The program fare varies each month. Call to register or stop by the Adult Reference Desk.
• At 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, meet Jon Waterman, award-winning author and renowned adventurer, as he presents "Arctic Warming." The presentation explains global warming with objectivity and scientific credibility while including Jon's own story of trekking, rafting and solo kayaking through the Arctic Refuge.
• At 11:30 a.m. Nov. 14, join Al Popowits for a discussion of Berlin. The journey begins with the divided city of the 1980s, travel along the wall to see the ruins, the Communist watch towers and catch glimpses into the dreadful no-mans-land. Then fast forward 15 years and witness present-day Berlin, a developing 21st Century City.
Internet for Beginners: Take an instructive lesson on basic Internet searching at 1 p.m. Wednesday or Nov. 14. Register at the Adult Reference Desk or by phone at (847) 356-7711.
Wednesday Afternoon Club: All first-, second- and third-graders are invited to join the club to hear stories, laugh and be creative while sharing books, poems, riddles and jokes. At 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 10 through Nov. 14. Registration is under way.
Snowflake Craft: Watch and learn to make a snowflake from a paper doily at 7 p.m. Thursday. Local artist and author Chuck McCann will show how. Register at the Adult Reference Desk. Supplies are included with the $5 fee. Class is limited to 20 and is intended for adults and children ages 12 and above only.
AV Sale: The Friends of the Lake Villa District Library will hold an AV Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. And 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the lobby of the library. Items in the sale will include CDs, DVDs, cassettes, and books on tape.
Adult book discussion: The adult book discussion group meets at 10 a.m. the second Saturday of each month in the library's Wilton Room. Refreshments are served, and new members are welcome.
On Saturday, the topic will be "A Farewell to Arms" by Ernest Hemingway, the story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front during World War I and his love for an English nurse.
On Nov. 10 the topic will be "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" by Kim Edwards, the story of a doctor who is forced by a blizzard to deliver his own twins and makes a split-second decision that will alter all of their lives forever.
The Bucket Boys: Start Teen Read Week, Sunday to Oct. 20, with The Bucket Boys, a progressive percussion duo, who combine rhythm and comedy to deliver an interactive performance of sight, sound and laughter, at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The Bucket Boys use a mobile collection of ordinary items to crash, bang, and pound out cadences and dance beats using trash cans, pots and pans, garbage barrels and, of course, buckets. All are welcome to attend.
Novel thoughts: Novel Thoughts is a book discussion group for fourth- through sixth-graders that meets at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month at in the library's conference room. Registration is ongoing, and space is limited.
• On Oct. 17, "Heat" by Mike Lupica will be discussed.
• On Nov. 14, "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" by Robert O'Brien will be discussed.
• On Dec. 19, "Millions" by Frank Boyce Cottrell will be discussed.
Plot Your Genealogy: Genealogy guru, Jeff Bockman, will help participants unearth clues to their family histories by researching cemetery and funeral home records at 1 p.m. Oct. 18. Refreshments will be served. Register at the Adult Reference Desk or by phone.
Friday Fun Faire: Fridays present opportunities for 3-year-olds to kindergartners to enjoy a story and make a craft. Adult supervision required.
Registration is under way to join the sessions offered at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Oct. 19.
The Write Stuff: Third- through sixth-graders are invited to join this group the third Saturday of each month for a series of hourlong creative writing workshops.
The group will explore different kinds of writing throughout the year, with the goal of creating a literary magazine.
• Registration is under way to join "Change Your Point of View" at 1 p.m. Oct. 20. Explore telling stories from different perspectives.
• "Find Your (Writing) Voice": Participants get to know their personalities as authors at 1 p.m. Nov. 17. Registration is under way.
Grab and Snap: Children ages 5 to 12 are invited to grab their camera and enter the library's "Grab & Snap" photography contest. This year, the theme is "Readin' 'Round Town." Take and send pictures of books in interesting places. Connect the book with the place, or take pictures of people reading in unusual places.
Photos must be 3-by-5 inches or 4-by-6 inches. Children may submit up to three different photos but must submit two copies of each photo. Photos should not be digitally edited. Photos may include people but make sure to receive their permission. A photo release form must be completed for each person in the picture. Photo release forms are available at the library's youth services reference desk or download a copy by visiting the library's Web site at www.lvdl.org.
Tape an entry form onto the back of each photo. Entry forms are available at the youth services reference desk or download forms on the Web site. Photos with entry forms can be turned in until Oct. 21 at the youth services reference desk.
On Nov. 2, winners will be announced. Local art teachers will select first-, second- and third-place winners for 5- and 6-year-olds, 7- to 9-year-olds and 10- to 12-year-olds as well as an overall Best In Show winner. One picture in each age category also will win a Kids' Choice Award, determined by popular vote. Voting for the Kids' Choice Awards will be Oct. 22 to 31.
