2 deputies involved in crash
Four people were hospitalized Sunday when a Lake County sheriff's deputy crashed his squad car into another deputy's squad then hit a civilian's vehicle head-on.
Deputy Nick Sipola reportedly was following Sgt. Brian Keller west on Peterson Road, about a half-mile west of Route 83 about 10:30 a.m. when Keller slowed down to investigate a trespasser on vacant property.
Sipola rear-ended Keller's squad car then crossed the center lane and struck an eastbound black Cadillac Escalade, Sheriff's Lt. John Jansky said.
The Cadillac was driven by George Treutelaar, 55, of Green Oaks. Treutelaar's son, George, 28, and his granddaughter, Lilly, 18 months, were with him in the car.
Sipola and the three occupants of the Cadillac were taken to Lake Forest Hospital.
Sipola was admitted and treated for non-life threatening injuries and the other three were treated and released.
Jansky said the Cadillac and Sipola's squad car were totaled. Damages to Keller's squad have not yet been assessed.
Jansky said the state's attorney's office will decide whether to ticket or charge Sipola with a crime.
Meanwhile, Keller was not hurt in the crash and continued investigating the possible trespassing.
"Right now Lt. Jansky is investigating," Sheriff Mark Curran said. "We are going to let the chips fall, and I can assure you, if our deputy did something wrong, he will be ticketed."
