Fans lament after another setback

"They teased you into making you think that they're going to do something, but they never follow through, and you just get disappointed every year and it's endless."

-- Cubs fan Tom Lewandowski of Vernon Hills

It was only the eighth inning, and their team was in the playoffs at last, but Chicago Cubs fans didn't seem to care as they poured out of Wrigley Field Saturday night.

With the Cubs down 4-1 at the top of the eighth, many didn't bother staying to watch their beloved Cubbies fall to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Such was the case for Tom Lewandowski of Vernon Hills, whose eyes welled with tears as he left the friendly confines.

"They teased you into making you think that they're going to do something, but they never follow through, and you just get disappointed every year and it's endless," he said. "It never stops and it never will stop. It will just keep happening forever."

The Cubs went on to lose 5-1, dropping three in a row to Arizona.

Jean Tremblay of Chicago was already looking to next year, the 100th anniversary of the Cubs' last World Series win.

"We don't want to rush into it," she joked.

Eric Sarff of Champaign, a 25-year Cubs fan, was equally optimistic about next year.

"Always a Cubs fan, they'll be back next year," he said.
