Prep for heat, marathoners
Chicago Marathon organizers preparing for warm weather
Organizers of the Chicago Marathon are warning runners who plan to line up for the race that they should prepare for high temperatures and humidity.
Forecasters are predicting unseasonably warm weather for Sunday morning's 26.2-mile race through the streets of Chicago. Marathon organizers say they're responding by supplying aid stations with more fluids and making sure runners have access to cooling buses, water-soaked sponges and misters along the course. There also will be an air-conditioned medical tent at the finish line.
Marathon medical director Dr. George Chiampas says participants should watch their hydration, adjust their pace for the weather and wear lightweight, breathable fabrics along with sunglasses and sunscreen. Chiampas says all runners should slow down or stop and seek medical help if they're feeling ill.
