Man dies at shortened marathon
One death has been reported at the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon.
A 35-year-old from Midland, Mich., collapsed during the race and died around 12:50 p.m. at a local hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
An autopsy for the man, Chad Schieber, is scheduled for Monday.
Race officials confirmed that as of 5 p.m., they knew of only one fatality. More than 300 people were transported to various hospitals out of the 35,000 runners.
The marathon was cut short around noon today due to high temperatures.
"We had a contingency plan that if the heat was higher than we expected and if the runners weren't performing accordingly, we could close the course," said Marianne Caponi, race spokeswoman.
The marathon runs 26.2 miles and people were diverted at about 13.5 miles and being shuttled to the finish line area.
This is the first time the course has been shut down in race history.
Sunday's record-breaking temperature hit a high of 87 degrees at the O'Hare weather station, National Weather Service officials said. The previous record for Oct. 7 was set in 1947 when the temperature soared to 86 degrees, officials said.
