Korosis, Lakes soar to win over Zion-Benton
There are good shots -- and then there's the spectacular ones of highlight reel quality.
Lakes' Steven Korosis made his one-time volley kick stand above most others when he scored in mid-air on Saturday morning.
Jon DeGrave added the Eagles' other goal as Lakes shut out visiting Zion-Benton 2-0 in a North Suburban Conference Prairie Division match.
Korosis' soaring goal was set up off a header from Jose Alvarado -- and somehow netted a goal for the Eagles.
"I really don't know how I scored that one," said Korosis, a sophomore who notched his seventh goal of the season. "I thought the shot was going to go wide, but I found this one."
Korosis usually plays outside midfield for the Eagles -- and he made the best of a scoring chance in the box.
"I usually like to take the ball down the line to beat a defender," Korosis said. "I just found a good opportunity this time around."
Lakes (12-7) has won 10 of its last 11 games and is the Prairie Division champion.
The Eagles will host Lake Zurich for the North Suburban Conference championship Wednesday at 7 p.m.
DeGrave had scored the first goal in the fifth minute when he took the ball from midfield and beat Zee-Bees keeper Trevor Pontillo.
"We had a tricky game (against Zion-Benton), because they're tough physically and they've got some nice players," said Lakes coach Kevin Kullby. "Getting an early goal from Jon DeGrave was awesome. He just made his chance a good one.
"Our defense was solid and we didn't give up goals like we did last year to Zion-Benton (7-9-1). It was a good all-around team game."
Lakes keeper Matt Laine earned the shutout, making 6 saves.
"I thought we were competitive throughout the game," said Zee-Bees coach Cliff Pontillo. "We had our opportunities to score, but we didn't get one. They were able to score on a couple of chances.
"I'm still happy with our effort and with the way we've played all year."
