Sex offender who drove ice cream truck gets 3 years
A convicted sex offender was sentenced today to three years in prison for having contact with children while driving an ice cream truck near Glen Ellyn.
Raymond W. Mitchell Sr., 59, of Lyons, was sentenced after pleading guilty to the felony charge.
Police arrested Mitchell in June after questioning him about a car accident he witnessed. After running a routine background check, police learned the ice cream truck driver was a convicted sex offender. They put him under surveillance.
Police said Mitchell was selling ice cream and talking to children in the Butterfield West subdivision. Mitchell, though, said he was only driving the truck while his wife sold treats to children.
At the time, he was on probation in Cook County for possessing child pornography. DuPage Circuit Judge Kathryn Creswell sentenced him today to the maximum three-year prison term.
