Inning by inning: Game 1 at a glance

PHOENIX - Dr. Jesse McGuire delivered a stirring version of the National Anthem on his trumpet before Game 1 of the National League division series between the Cubs and Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Wednesday night.

Considering the late starting time (first pitch was 9:07 p.m. Chicago time), maybe McGuire can head to Chicago and play a little reveille this morning.

If you were sleeping, here's what happened:

First inningYou can't question Alfonso Soriano for swinging at Arizona starter Brandon Webb's first pitch of the game and grounding out.Soriano set a Cubs record with 14 home runs in September, and 6 came leading off the first inning. Let's just say Soriano pretty much has the green light to swing whenever he feels like it.Jacque Jones follows Soriano with a walk and doesn't budge off first base.As for the D'backs, Chris Young leads off with a single and steals second, but Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano keeps his cool and pitches out of trouble. No score.Second inningMark DeRosa gets the Cubs' first hit of the postseason, an opposite-field single to right with one out. DeRosa makes it to second base on Geovany Soto's groundout, but another groundball by Ryan Theriot ends the mild threat. In the bottom of the second, Jeff Salazar draws a one-out walk and is erased on a double play. No score.Third inningArizona starter Micah Owings (.333, 4 home runs, 15 RBI) is the NL's best hitting pitcher, but Zambrano (.247, 2 HR, 5 RBI) can hold his own with the lumber. Zambrano leads off with third with a double to left field, but Webb shows why he's the defending Cy Young winner by striking out Soriano, Jones and Derek Lee.In a matchup of ace pitchers, Zambrano holds serve while retiring the D'backs in order. No score.Fourth inningDeRosa is hit by a pitch with two outs, and the Cubs' offense continues to struggle.Stephen Drew doesn't hit for power like his big brother J.D., who plays for the Boston Red Sox. But when Zambrano throws a 1-0 fastball right down the middle, Drew crushes it, a 432-foot home run to center.Fifth inningTheriot leads off with a routine grounder to third base, and Mark Reynolds (who are these guys?) throws it in the stands for a two-base error. Again, the Cubs fail to cash.Sixth inningNot quite an eruption, but the Cubs take advantage of 2 Webb walks when Theriot's infield single scores Lee, who led off with a single. The game stays tied at 1-1 after Drew reaches on a one-out single and stays put.Seventh inningWebb looked like he was tiring in the sixth. Look again. He easily retires Soriano, Jones and Lee.Zambrano must have tired after throwing 85 pitches, because Carlos Marmol comes on in relief and serves up a leadoff home run to Reynolds. After striking out Salazar, Marmol allows a walk, double and sac fly to put the Cubs in a deep hole, down 3-1.Eighth inningBrandon Lyon relieves Webb and is greeted by deep drives to right field by Aramis Ramirez and Cliff Floyd. Salazar catches both, and Reynolds makes a nice play at third to retire DeRosa.Bob Howry replaces Marmol and retires the side in order.Ninth inningTo review, the Cubs have 1 run on 4 hits through the first 8 innings. And here comes Arizona's Jose Valverde, one of baseball's best closers. Pinch-hitter Daryle Ward draws a two-out walk to keep hope alive, but Soriano grounds out. Good night Cubs.
