Judges set to select best chili contest
Residents and businesses will compete in the much missed Chili Cook-off from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday at a spot along Eastman Street, adjacent to the north side of North School Park. Awards will be given in two categories: "People's Choice Best Chili" and the "Best Chili in Arlington Heights."
The judges will be: Arlington Heights Deputy Fire Chief Ken Koeppen; Joe Bartosch, from The SCORE radio show and Carol Blackwood from Village Bank.
Happy 50th: Arlington Heights Village President Arlene Mulder is slated to swing by the Knights of Columbus Council No. 4483 50th anniversary celebration at 8 p.m. today at 15 N. Hickory. The Knights are a Catholic charitable group that serves St. James, St. Edna, Our Lady of Wayside and St. Colette in Rolling Meadows.
Workers comp claim OK'd: Arlington Heights Fire Department Lt. David Diedrich was recently awarded a $28,000 workers comp settlement.
Diedrich twisted his right ankle after getting out of a fire truck on April 14, 2006, according to Village Manager Bill Dixon. After the accident, Diedrich underwent surgery and physical therapy but eventually returned to work. The board approved the agreement at Monday's village board meeting.
Library open on Monday: Lots of local schools are off on Monday for Columbus Day, but the Arlington Heights library will be open.
Kids are invited to the library's Hendrickson room where there will be DDR (Dance, Dance Revolution), Guitar Hero, Mario Kart and board games for school-aged kids. One session is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the other is from 1 to 3 p.m.
No registration needed.
Healthy fact: Around 25 percent of Windsor Elementary School students are members of the "Wildcat Runners" running club.
The group's members run around the school grounds and are taught proper stretches. The running club will meet several times in October, which is also "Healthy Lung" month.
Free eye exams for kids: Palermo Eye Care in Arlington Heights will give free eye exams to kids 5 years and younger from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Make a reservation at (847) 253-8500. Palermo Eye Care is located at 18 S Evergreen Ave. in the Evergreen Plaza in downtown Arlington Heights. This is the second year the business has offered the free kids eye exams.
Flu shots next week: Before the flu season, comes flu shot season. Arlington Heights will offer flu shots from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 11, by appointment only. To make an appointment, call (847) 253-5532.
The cost for the vaccine is $20, billable to Medicare for those with Medicare Part B as their primary insurance. Pneumonia shots will also be available with a doctor's order for $40, also billable to Medicare if appropriate.
