Rasor, Lake County corner Moraine Valley

For most of the season, the College of Lake County women's soccer team came up empty on corner kicks.

Recently, coach Dawn Vickers decided every practice would include work on set pieces. The Lancers' work was rewarded Monday and they hope it will continue to pay dividends into the postseason.

Sophomore Melanie Rasor tallied on a corner kick as part of the Lancers' blitz of six goals in the first 25 minutes of play. That was all the scoring for either team in CLC's 6-0 Skyway Conference victory over visiting Moraine Valley.

Freshman Ingrid Johnson (Lakes) served a high ball into the middle of the box. Rasor had good position and was able to head it home. Rasor finished with 2 goals and 2 assists.

"Mel sees the field and knows where she (needs) to be," Vickers said. "She has a great shot and can place it wherever you want."

CLC's other goal-scorers were freshman Ally Yarc (Libertyville), freshman Sharon Kallner (Grant), freshman Lauren Cloonan (Grant) and freshman Elizabeth Ranck (Mundelein). Sophomore Ashley Lowry (Antioch) contributed 3 assists.

The Lancers (11-3) were more opportunistic against Moraine Valley than in their previous match Sept. 10. CLC managed a 4-0 victory but squandered several chances.

"It didn't take us long this time to put the ball in the net," Yarc said.

CLC moved the ball extremely well throughout the first half.

"We still need to work on our first touch, but we put together more passes than the last time we played them," Kallner said. "We're becoming more of a team."

The Lancers played sloppy at times in the second half, much as they did Thursday in a 4-3 victory over the College of DuPage. Maintaining intensity for 90 minutes is crucial as the Lancers head toward the state playoffs.

CLC has three regular season matches left before the playoffs begin Oct. 20.

"I want them to play just as hard in the second half," Vickers said. "We need to (keep) moving the ball from one side to the other to tire out the better teams."
