More to the story than revenue only
I was prompted to write this letter regarding the information in the Sunday edition about school funding and the increases in revenue over 10 years.
As presented, it makes it look as if the school districts are "rollin' in the dough". What your article failed to disclose was the other side of the equation and a necessary piece to the ever-baffling school-funding puzzle.
How much have the expenses increased over 10 years? Also, to be factored in to make the article balanced would be the question, how much growth has occurred in 10 years? How many new students have been welcomed to a school district? How many teachers, buildings, etc., have been added over the time period. Also, how much has the assessed valuation of properties within a school district increased over a 10 year time period?
To simply throw out the increase in revenues over 10 years is misdirecting the public. When many school districts will again be seeking referendums for a number of issues, to imply that their funding has had huge increases and not show the other side of the issue is, in fact, poor journalism. I hope you will delve into the other issues that relate to school funding and education in a more balanced fashion.
