More gambling is not the answer

"What were they thinking?" The senators who voted for the three new mega casinos, additional slot machines for existing casinos and account deposit wagering from any electronic device have fallen for "fool's gold."

One only needs to ask the question, "Did the lottery solve funding for schools?" or remember the Rosemont questions of corruption.

I wish the senators had read the article, "Bad Odds," in the June 11 Wall Street Journal. A number of economists, Ricardo Gazel, Earl Grinols, David Mustard and others, have reached the conclusion that, "As more states look to win the economic jackpot with casinos, evidence suggests they are playing a losing hand."

The senators of Illinois have chosen an unstable source of revenue rather than to look hard at the budget, find the waste, get realistic priorities, make the hard decisions, and show the statesmanship Illinois residents have a right to expect.

Before the veto session, starting Tuesday, please call your House representative and tell him/her to vote no against this massive gambling expansion bill passed by the Senate.
