Briefs: Immigration session on tap
Chicago Public Radio will host a discussion on immigration at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. The discussion will be broadcast live from 8 to 9 p.m. on WBEZ, 91.5 FM. The event will include suburban officials, community members, and immigration law and policy experts. Elgin discusses parks
Elgin's parks and recreation department will hold a planning meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday for the park in the Copper Springs subdivision. The meeting will be in the west conference room of The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way. This is the second in a series of meetings to determine how the park will be developed. Fireworks show canceled
The South Elgin special events committee has canceled the fireworks show that was rained out during the Riverfest Express festival, said Joyce Ware, the committee's co-chair. Instead, they plan to shoot off the fireworks during next year's Riverfest. The fireworks were originally scheduled for Aug. 19, but were rained out. "We're looking forward to a big display next year, weather permitting," Ware said.
DeWitte named council V.P.
St. Charles Mayor Don DeWitte has been named vice president of the Metro West Council of Government. The council unanimously voted DeWitte into the position last week. He will hold the position until 2008, when he becomes council president. The council is an association of 27 municipalities in Kane, DeKalb and Kendall counties that facilitates cooperation and communication among governments in addressing regional issues, such as growth, transportation and economic development. "We can do much more effectively together than we can do individually," DeWitte said. "It's a very aggressive and cohesive group."
Hydrant flushing tomorrow
St. Charles residents and businesses in the area of South Fifth and West Main streets may experience rust-colored water Tuesday while the fire department tests hydrants. The tests are scheduled to begin about 10:30 a.m. and be complete by noon. Discolored water is safe to drink but may damage laundry, officials said. For a rust-removal kit, call (630) 377-4405. Drivers also are being asked to use caution during the tests because the pavement may be wet.
Learn about breast cancer
To help women learn what they can do to prevent breast cancer, Rush-Copley Medical Center is hosting "Think Pink!" at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kendall County Historic Courthouse, 110 W. Madison St. in Yorkville. The event will feature a "Breast Health 101" program with a nurse and a mammography technologist. There will be bra fittings, educational booths, pampering and a gift. Glenwood fundraiser
A wine- and food-tasting Thursday will raise money for the Glenwood School for Boys and Girls, west of St. Charles. The event, "Flavor of the Fox Valley," will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Glenwood field house, 41W400 Silver Glen Road. Admission is $50, and reservations should be made at www.glenwoodschool.org. Moms Together meeting
Moms Together presents Jill Savage speaking about "My Heart's At Home: Becoming the Intentional Mom Your Family Needs," this month.
