Daily Herald projects win awards from association
Two Daily Herald projects earned awards for excellence Friday night from the Chicago Journalists Association.
Writer Sue TerMaat's story "Helping Themselves," about health care and retirement problems facing nuns as they struggle to care for their aging population, won in the contest's Public Service category.
Writers Amy Boerema, Stacy St. Clair and Eric Peterson and photographer Bev Horne clinched the Best Series honor for "Finding Family," a string of stories that explored the complex world of international adoption.
The series, which ran in the Daily Herald in December, featured profiles of families who'd taken that journey.
TerMaat's article, published in January, focused on 93-year-old Sister Valerie and her convent in Bartlett.
The five Daily Herald staff members were recognized at a dinner event in Chicago.
The Chicago Journalists Association was formed in 1898 at the Columbian Exposition and became an active organization after the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago.
Its members are journalists who have worked in the 10-county Chicago area, which includes northwest Indiana and southeast Wisconsin.
