Workers sever another gas line in Naperville
Construction crews accidentally broke a 4-inch natural gas main around noon Thursday near the Reagan Memorial Tollway and Commons Drive in north Naperville, authorities said.
Early last week, workers broke a different 4-inch line in the same area.
Naperville Fire Department Assistant Chief Richard Mikel said there were no injuries and no need for an evacuation because the pipe was isolated. However, the Naperville Road exit ramp was closed from about noon to 2:30 p.m., state tollway officials said.
Nicor officials said crews turned off the gas 30 minutes after they arrived and were still on the site making repairs Thursday evening.
"We don't have the specific timeframe as to when the repairs will be completed, but traffic is flowing through the area," Nicor spokesman Tom Kallay said.
Mikel said two accidents in the same vicinity aren't uncommon because of the intensive amount of road and commercial construction in the area.
"It's not unusual for there to be incidents of this type associated with large construction projects," he said.
Kallay said an investigation will take place to find out exactly what happened.
