Winston taking part in Walk to School Day

Those who live near Winston Elementary School may notice a sea of green-clad kids walking to school on Wednesday.

All students attending Winston Elementary have been asked to wear green and walk to school, if possible, along with parents, teachers and community leaders as part of International Walk to School Day.

When walkers arrive on the school block, they will be greeted by a PTA volunteer and given a sticker to indicate that they have participated in International Walk to School Day.

Students who are unable to walk to school because of their family schedule or who ride a bus are encouraged to wear green, and will be given a chance to participate in a walk during the school day.

Students and families will be learning about the health and environmental benefits of walking to school during the month of October in class, through the PTA newsletter and information sent home to families.

For information on International Walk to School Day, visit the Web site www.walktoschool-usa.org.

Marionette show: Speaking of school, the kids are out of school for Columbus Day on Oct. 8 and the library is offering a show to help keep them entertained.

At 11 a.m. Oct. 8, Hans Christian Anderson's classic tale "The Emperor and the Nightingale" will come to life by Franceska's Marionette Theater. Audiences of all ages will enjoy the story of how the elusive nightingale's song changed the life of the selfish emperor.

Tickets are available for Palatine Public Library District cardholders at the Reader Assistance Desk.
