St. Charles North bands honor vets
What would Veterans Day be without veterans? Or, in the case of school ceremonies honoring veterans, what better way to do it than to invite veterans to participate?
That's how the St. Charles North High School music department is looking at its 7:30 p.m. Veterans Celebration concert Nov. 12 at the high school.
Students and teachers involved in the music program at St. Charles North are spreading the word to area veterans that they are encouraged to attend this concert. The music department's Web site provides details at www.northstarbands.com, and encourages those who know veterans to visit the site and get involved. Veterans will have free admission to the concert.
St. Charles North music instructor Brian Wis said the school has six concert bands and North's top two bands are presenting the Veterans Day concert.
"Our goal is to bring veterans together so they can be more fully appreciated for their service to our country," Wis said. "Our students are incredibly excited about doing this. We hope the veterans will hear about the event and join us."
Wis reminds attendees that donations of nonperishable food and toiletries will be taken at the concert to aid a veterans' homeless shelter.
Vote early, often: The e-mail campaign to send in daily votes with the hope of receiving funding for the Viking ship at Good Templar Park in Geneva has been impressive. The fact that you can vote every day means that supporters of Preservation Partners are sending reminders each morning through Oct. 10.
Liz Safanda of Preservation Partners wrote the proposal and asked for $60,000 from American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation for funding to preserve the ship, an exact replica built for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and save it as a cultural and historic piece in the community.
The link for voting is www.partnersinpreservation.com and supporters are also reminding us we can vote each day on every screen name in our e-mail accounts.
Wouldn't politicians love this?
Against the flow: One of these years my wife and I will have to participate in the Walk for Women's Wellness put on by Delnor-Community Hospital at Fabyan Forest Preserve.
For the second straight year, while on our Sunday morning walk, we "bumped" into hundreds of participants walking for charity. And again, we were walking in the opposite direction.
It was a sea of lime green, as the participants donned the event T-shirts while making their way along the trail into Batavia and back to Geneva near the county government center.
Years of volunteering: The volunteers honored Monday night for helping the Fox Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross this year were part of a significant birthday party.
Congratulations to the local chapter on its 90th year of serving the region. That's a lot of help being offered for many years.
That season again: If winter is looming, it means flu season is as well.
So take note: Free flu shots for those 55 and older who qualify will be offered 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 8 at the Geneva Township Senior Center.
