Briefs: Probation for break-ins
The second of three people accused of a series of Antioch car burglaries will spend the next six months in jail when not working or attending substance abuse counseling. Timothy Leber, 18, will also be on probation for 30 months after pleading guilty to burglary. Assistant State's Attorney George Pappas said Leber, of 570 Drom Court, Antioch, was arrested June 19 when police spotted him and his co-defendants at the rear of an auto repair shop at 2:30 a.m. Police found a bag containing about 100 CDs and a digital camera that Leber told them had been taken from four unlocked cars in the Antioch Manor Apartment complex. Daniel Friel, 20, of 110802 218th Ave., Bristol, Wis., was sentenced to 180 days in jail and two years' probation when he pleaded guilty to burglary Sept. 19. John Goik, 17, of 26483 Grapevine, Antioch, is due in court Oct. 11.
Metra trains delayed
Five Metra trains were delayed Monday when a passenger train hit a pedestrian on the Milwaukee North Line. Metra spokesman Patrick Waldron said the train was traveling to Chicago when it struck the man near Hart Road and Route 134 outside of Round Lake. Three inbound and two outbound trains were delayed 12 to 42 minutes following the accident. Lake County coroner said the accident remains under investigation.
Cardinal to bless church
St. Raphael the Archangel, the Archdiocese of Chicago's newest Catholic parish will welcome Cardinal Francis George at 6 p.m. Saturday. George will bless and dedicate the new parish, located in a barn on Route 173, just outside of Antioch. A reception with George will follow the celebration in the church hall. St. Raphael has been open since Sept. 1 and serves Antioch, Lake Villa, Gurnee, Wadsworth, Lindenhurst, all of Old Mill Creek and residents living along the Illinois-Wisconsin line.
Hospital meetings
The Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board has scheduled a special meeting Oct. 3 and 4 in Chicago to hear proposals from Vista Health and Advocate Health Care to build new hospitals in Lindenhurst and Round Lake, respectively. The board will listen to testimony from both heath care providers and determine if there is a need for a new hospital in Lake County. If either proposal is accepted, it would be the first hospital in the county in 30 years.
Play set for Stevenson
Stevenson High School students will perform comedian Steve Martin's play, "Picasso at the Lapin Agile," on Oct. 5 and 6. The show, first performed at the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, is a fictional account of a meeting between Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso. It begins at 7:30 p.m. each day in the school's performing arts center. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the door.
