Storm downs power lines, trees in Elgin

A strong storm raked Elgin this afternoon, damaging several buildings and downing trees and power lines, Elgin police said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Police say they began receiving calls at 2:25 p.m. regarding a possible microburst in southwest Elgin.

Part of a roof was blown off of a building on Fleetwood Drive, a house was struck by lightning on Maureen Drive, and emergency personnel were responding to at least a dozen other calls of damaged trees and power lines in the area around McLean Boulevard and Route 20, according to preliminary reports.
