Man will be deported after serving 4½ years
A Round Lake Park man linked to an assault on a woman by a global positioning device in the victim's cell phone was sentenced to 41/2 years in prison Monday.
Luis Alberbo-Garcia, 22, will have to serve the prison sentence before an order of deportation already filed against him is enforced, Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Bolling Haxall said.
Haxall said Alberto-Garcia met the victim, a 23-year-old Round Lake woman, at a bar on the night of Jan. 13. They had several drinks together.
The two went back to a house Alberto-Garcia was renting at 204 Washington St. where the woman fell asleep in one of the bedrooms.
She awoke to find Alberto-Garcia undressing and sexually molesting her, and screamed for him to stop.
Alberto-Garcia responded by punching her in the face, and during the ensuing struggle she was able to get her cell phone out of her pocket and dial 911.
Although the woman could not tell police where she was, police were able to determine her location through a GPS device in the phone.
She was able to run out of the house before police arrived but directed them back to the house where Alberto-Garcia was arrested.
Alberto-Garcia was originally charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, but the charge was reduced to aggravated criminal sexual abuse Monday in exchange for his guilty plea.
Haxall said the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has had an order for deportation against Alberto-Garcia since 2005.
He said Alberto-Garcia will be required to serve his prison sentence before being returned to his native El Salvador.
