Grayslake family safe after house fire
An early morning fire caused significant damage to a Grayslake home Monday.
The cause of the fire is under investigation; however, officials believe it was started by an electrical outlet on the outside of the house at 1469 Fairport Drive.
A female homeowner called the fire department around 6:30 a.m. when she saw flames outside from the window of her baby's room, said Deputy Chief Greg Formica.
"The family was awoken by smoke alarms, and everybody, including a dog and parakeet, made it out safely," Formica said.
In addition to mother and baby, the woman's husband and a second child, a toddler, were home at the time.
Formica estimates at least $100,000 in damage to the home, with the majority of damage to the front of the house and the attic.
