Three men shot Sunday night in Elgin
Three young Elgin men were injured Sunday night on Elgin's east side in a gang-related incident police today said might have been a drive-by shooting.
Benito Suarez, 21, of 472 Ann St., was shot in the back at Gifford and Ann streets and taken to Sherman Hospital. His condition was not available early this afternoon.
Xavier Granger, 19, and a 17-year-old boy were found a short distance away with gunshot wounds in a leg and a foot, police said.
The teenagers were taken to Sherman Hospital, where they were treated and released, police said.
At 11:10 p.m. Sunday, police had responded to calls for gunshots and a subject lying in the street at Gifford and Ann streets.
Police have made no arrests and are looking for a late model gray or silver Pontiac that may have been involved.
The city has had at least six other shootings in the past two months, all on the east side, that left two dead and four injured.
Two of the shootings were near schools - one just after classes let out at Sheridan Elementary School, and the other while 7- and 8- year-olds played football and were cheerleading at Drake Field.
A peace march held 10 days ago in protest of the spate of shootings had marched through the same spot as Sunday's shooting, said Jim Vaughn, who organized the event.
He said neighbors should stay vigilant and make their presence known at night.
"This is just a kick n the teeth," said Vaughn, head of Summit Park Neighbors. "It's just these young studs, they don't care. But we're going to show them that we care, I promise you that."
Elgin Police Chief Lisa Womack is scheduled to hold her monthly meeting with residents at 7 p.m. today at the police department, 151 Douglas Ave.
Elgin police ask anyone with information related to Sunday's shooting to call the Gang Unit at (847) 289-2600.
