Baby-sitter Training Class: Students ages 11 to 16 can learn the basics involved in babysitting. The American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Course provides the information and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absence of parents or adult guardians. This training will help participants develop skills in leadership, safety and safe play, basic care, first aid and professionalism. Bring a pen or pencil to class; books will be provided. There are three sessions for babysitting from 4 to 6 p.m., beginning today and Oct. 16 at the Sports Center. Classes are two days per week for two weeks. Register in advance at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center.
Fall Prevention for Seniors: Learn the easiest, least expensive ways to reduce the risk of a fall from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Round Lake Area Park District Senior Center. Mary Ellen Saunders will discuss fall prevention for seniors. She is currently the director of ElderCARE@ChristChurch's Safety and Fall Prevention Project. Glitzy Girlz Glamour: Glitzy Girlz will host a pop star party for girls ages 5 to 11 from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Round Lake Area Park District. Each girl will receive glitter makeovers, beaded hair braid extensions and nail polish application. A microphone headset will be provided to take home. Each girl will design and decorate a personalized CD case holder with stamps, glitter paints and embellishments, and design a crystal jewelry piece with a unique rock girl charm. Girls will also sing and lead dances such as the YMCA, Macarena, Cha-Cha-Slide, Limbo and Freeze dance. Register at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center or the Sports Center.
Go Wild in the West: Parents and children ages 3 and older can join the Prairie Grass Nature Museum for a morning of Wild West fun from 10:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 6 at the Nature Museum. Register at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center or the Sports Center. There will be cowboy-related crafts, games, weather permitting a campfire and a singalong. Kids can put on their best cowpoke gear and bring along a stick horse or stuffed horse or cow. There will be light refreshments and participants may bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the pavilion afterward.
Medic First Aid/CPR/AED: Anyone 18 and older can learn how to respond to emergencies with adults, infants and children, and learn about first aid, sudden illnesses, bleeding, CPR and AED. Upon completion of the course, participants will be issued certification for two years. Class will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 9 and 10 at the Sports Center. The registration deadline is Oct. 2. Special Community Days: Celebrate various people, cultures and traditions of the world from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays from Oct. 10 to 24. Activities will include Stop, Drop & Roll; Noah Webster's Birthday Party; and National Popcorn Celebration. Registration is required by Oct. 3 at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center or the Sports Center. Special Community Days are for ages 2 to 5 with a parent and will meet in the Children's Neighborhood Museum Activity Center.
Self Defense: This two-hour hands-on class will teach teens and adults simple, easy-to-use techniques to help protect themselves and their loved ones. Originally state certified for law enforcement, the Brave Way Program teaches personal security, self-defense and rape prevention techniques. This is not a martial art, and no previous self-defense training is required to master the moves taught in class. The techniques are intended to be easy to learn, effective, based on instinctive principles that don't require constant practice or years of training to use, and to work regardless of size, strength, speed or skill. The program includes lecture, demonstration, hands-on instruction, defense against armed and unarmed attackers, single and multiple attackers, standing, sitting, ground techniques and rape prevention. Self Defense will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center Senior Center. Register by Oct. 10 at the Community Center or the Sports Center.
Project Art: This program is for children ages 6 to 10. Participants will be exposed to a variety of different forms of art which use different mediums to create. Each child will have the opportunity to complete one project per class. Project Art will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 18 to Nov. 29, at the Children's Neighborhood Museum Activity Center, 814 Hart Road, Round Lake. The registration deadline is Oct. 11. Yoga for Kids: This class will engage parent and children ages 2 to 4 years old to come together through the union of movement, breath and focus with simple yoga poses. Yoga will run from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 23 to Nov. 27 at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center Dance Studio. The registration deadline is Oct. 16.
Music for Mozarts: Children ages 4 to 6 can follow the musical discoveries of Mozart Mouse, Beethoven Bear and Clara Schumann the Cat. This class is a comprehensive approach to music learning that develops singing, movement and listening skills while introducing new musical concepts and styles. Music for Mozarts will meet on from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 24 to Dec. 12, at the Children's Neighborhood Museum Activity Center. The registration deadline is Oct. 17.
