Shop With A Cop calls

Kane County Sheriff's Lodge 14 is conducting a telephone drive for its annual Shop with a Cop program, in which Kane County deputies take children to a local department store. The goal is to collect enough community to provide each child with up to $100 worth of necessities, clothing and a toy, depending on family needs. '100 Years' at Arcada

Composer and lyricist Neil Berg's "100 Years of Broadway" comes to the Arcada Theater in St. Charles this month. The musical revue of Broadway classics is set for 8 p.m. Thursday at the theater, 105 E. Main St. In addition to Berg, "100 Years of Broadway" features original cast members from shows like "The Phantom of the Opera," "Les Miserables," and "Jesus Christ Superstar." Conference on poverty

CASA Kane County will conduct a conference called "Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities" from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Eagle Brook Country Club, 2288 Fargo Blvd., Geneva. This conference is open to the public, but is geared toward professionals who work with children and families who are living in poverty. Social workers, police officers and educators are among those expected to attend. Jodi Pfarr from aha! Process Inc. will be the guest speaker. Registration is $55. Campton park to be named

A Campton Township park will be dedicated at 6 p.m. Friday to the late Robert Anderson, a lifelong resident and former township supervisor. The park, to be known as Robert Anderson Colt Field, is off Brown Road, next door to where Anderson lived his entire life. Anderson died in February at 82. For details, call (630) 377-5705.

Holmstad bazaar

The Holmstad Retirement Community bazaar is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Fabyan Parkway and Route 31 in Batavia. Cash for farmers markets

Organizers of farmers markets can apply for state grants to promote their events. The Illinois Farmers Market Advertising Grant Program will provide farmer's markets up to $7,500 to help with advertising and promotional expenses during the 2008 season. The funds were awarded to the Illinois Department of Agriculture through the federal specialty crop program and will be distributed as part of Opportunity Returns, a program designed to spur more economic growth and create jobs. More than $175,000 is available. More than 220 farmers markets operate in Illinois, up from 97 in 1999. Applications, due Nov. 7, are available online at www.agr.state.il.us or by calling Kim Janssen at (217) 785-5848. Grants will be awarded by Feb. 1.

Great Western Trail closed

The Kane County Forest Preserve District recently announced a section of the Great Western Trail will be closed today through Friday for bridge replacement work. No access will be allowed between Meredith Road and Route 47 during the project. The Great Western Trail runs from St. Charles to the DeKalb County line, near Virgil. Call (630) 232-5980.

Night of mystery on tap

The Dundee Township Library will present a "Night of Mystery" at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the downstairs meeting room of the library at 555 Barrington Ave, Dundee. Former Harper College faculty member Julie Hennig will share her lifelong love of the mystery genre. The program will cover the background of the genre, its popularity and types, mystery by occupation, use of mystery in academia, cooking and mystery, as well as the speaker's favorite authors. St. Charles School District 303 parents can get tips on helping children who struggle with homework during a special presentation Tuesday at North High School, 255 Red Gate Road.
