No English credit, even when it's due

Remember that talk about defensive end Larry English's slow start? Forget about it.

After posting just 1 sack in his first three games, English went crazy in Northern Illinois' 42-35 victory at Idaho on Saturday night.

The junior from Marmion Academy piled up a school-record 5 sacks, including 1 he recovered in the end zone for his first career score.

Now, after being nowhere among the NCAA leaders, English finds himself tied for second nationally in sacks with Michigan State's Jonal Saint-Dic and Virginia's Chris Long.

Well, to be specific, English isn't actually on the official leaders list. Because of a bizarre and complete statistical screw-up at Idaho, English wasn't credited with any official tackles.

Instead fifth-year tight end Tom Kelly from Larkin, whose No. 44 jersey doesn't resemble English's No. 51 in any way, was listed as having made 12 tackles with 5 sacks.

In a similar vein, cornerback Chase Carter was credited with 35 carries for 167 yards and a touchdown. Those actually belonged to sophomore Justin Anderson, who deserves to rank No. 31 among the NCAA rushing leaders with 104 yards per game.

One item that wasn't up for debate on the stat sheet? Libertyville safety Jeff Fontana, a redshirt freshman, earned his first college score when he fell on Matt Simon's blocked punt in the end zone.
