Gunn makes it work

Oh, for the love of a good-fitting pair of jeans.

And one that, um, diminishes any unpleasant assets in the posterior region.

That's all Amy Kalas wanted Saturday.

Little did she know TV personality Tim Gunn of Bravo's "Project Runway" and "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" personally would deliver the perfect fit -- along with glowing praise.

Now that's a good pair of jeans.

The meeting happened in a custom tour bus in the parking lot at Yorktown Center in Lombard, where Gunn did a limited number of one-on-one sessions with shoppers interested in getting just-the-right Liz Claiborne jeans.

It's not even about buying their brand of jeans, Gunn said, it's about women buying the right jeans: jeans that both fit and make them feel fabulous.

America's greatest fashion downfall -- at least from what he saw Saturday? Women wear their clothes "too baggy," the chief creative officer of Liz Claiborne said.

Shoppers wanted to know "what can I get that can suit my real-world body," Gunn said.

This weekend's denim bus made one of its six stops around the country to help women find the Liz Claiborne jeans that fit the bill.

Kalas's first inclination was to head for the bootcut jeans. She discarded those after a quick fitting, though, and instead came out to model her second choice, the slim bootcut for Gunn. Even then, she was unsure.

"I feel like my butt looks flat and long," she said, turning her slender body around for Gunn to scrutinize.

Hand on chin, he pondered the selection, then asked about her concerns over the first pair. Apparently, she felt the waist was too high.

"If you dress to cover the top of the waist, that issue goes away," he said, sending her back to model the discarded first choice.

That pair got glowing reviews.

"You look absolutely stunning," Gunn said, effusively, as she returned. "And you're gorgeous to boot."

When he learned she'd just had a baby four months earlier, and still fit into a size 6, he was equally enthusiastic about her appearance.

"Oh, my God, you're just like Heidi (Klum) and Nina Garcia," he said.

Now that's high praise.

Kalas, of LaGrange Park, was ecstatic about her new jeans -- and her critique. She just really, really wanted a pair of denim that fit well -- she never expected to get a personal fitting from the man who now also has his own show, "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style."

Kalas said she's watched Gunn once or twice on "Project Runway," but it's fair to say he's made a new convert.

"I'll be watching," she said, "all the time now."
